Racial Discrimination in the Malaysian Rental Market: A Study of Prevalence, Causes and Solutions

This research aims to investigate the extent and nature of rental discrimination in Malaysia, identify its underlying causes and proposes solutions to address the issue.
How do Malaysian university students form social ties?
In Malaysia, the pursuit of social cohesion is not merely a societal ideal but a foundational element for national stability and prosperity. While Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity is celebrated as a hallmark of its identity, it also presents unique challenges in terms of fostering inclusive social networks that bridge, rather than reinforce, divisions. The research presented in this note addresses a critical gap in the understanding of social -tie formation in Malaysia. By examining its determinants, this research sheds light on the mechanisms that either facilitate or hinder the formation of interethnic social ties.
Rebuilding Social Bridges: Review and Recommendations for PLKN 3.0
Program Latihan Khidmat Negara, or PLKN, was first implemented in 2004 in response to a need to increase patriotism among youth. In 2016, the programme was rebranded as PLKN 2.0 and made optional, focusing on vocational training. In 2018, PLKN was fully abolished. Prior research demonstrated that while PLKN had some successes in improving interracial relations among participants, sub-optimal features of the programme limited its capacity to create significant reductions in prejudice and improve social cohesion. In present day, there is a great need for a social bridging programme due to increasing segregation among youth, the hollowing of opportunities for interracial friendships and increasing threats of extremism.
State of Discrimination Survey 2023
This survey aims to provide a baseline study on the quantitative nature of discrimination in Malaysia relating to various identities, including religion and race. In Malaysia, the Federal Constitution expressly provides under Article 8 that all citizens will be afforded equal protection under the law and that discrimination is prohibited based on religion, race, descent, place of birth or gender. However, weak to non-existent laws and institutions for non-discrimination have allowed for the proliferation of discrimination in various dimensions of social and political life. The survey was administered from 4 to 23 August, 2023 to adults ages 18 and above.

The survey covers topics such as employment, housing, education, wealth distribution, healthcare, environment, representation and law and order.
